Patients can have straighter teeth and a rejuvenated smile without enduring the adolescent stigma and discomfort associated with traditional metal braces. Many adults, although they understood the importance of a confident smile, were not willing to undergo orthodontic treatment. That has changed, thanks to the technological advances in modern dentistry.
Today, nearly half of all patients seeking orthodontic treatment are adults. Traditional wire and bracket braces have improved; they are lighter, smaller, and less uncomfortable. However, the innovative Invisalign System has an entirely different approach to straightening teeth that is incredibly popular with adults, as well as image conscious teens.
Invisalign offers a discreet, barely visible option for straightening teeth that is aesthetic, convenient, subtle, comfortable, and effective. This system uses BPA free thermoplastic aligners that look very similar to teeth whitening trays. A series of these aligners are custom made for each patient to move the teeth sequentially into better positions. Each aligner is exchanged for the next one in the series every two weeks, as they move the teeth in small increments. This gentle, controlled force eliminates the extreme discomfort brace wearers suffer after every wire tightening appointment.
The aligners are removable for cleaning, which is a terrific improvement over metal braces. Oral hygiene is just as easy as always with the added step of cleaning the aligners. Wire and bracket orthodontics make it very difficult and time-consuming to clean the teeth thoroughly. Frequently, some decay is present when the brackets are removed. The Invisalign system eliminates this concern.
There is an extensive restricted foods list for patients wearing traditional orthodontics. Patients can eat all of the foods they enjoy while straightening their teeth with Invisalign because the aligners are removed for eating, the only restriction is they can’t chew gum. However, it is necessary for patients to wear the aligners a minimum of 20 to 22 hours a day for the treatment to progress as directed.
An additional benefit to the Invisalign system is there are less frequent dental visits. The doctor checks on the treatment progress about every six weeks. Less time is spent in the dentist’s chair because there are no wires to tighten or adjustments to be made. Treatment takes from 9 to 18 months to complete, depending on the extent of correction needed.
