Preventive Care

Preventive care means regular dental checkups and cleanings. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends patients have their teeth cleaned twice a year, followed by dental checkups by the dentist. These visits are for everyone of every age. At Hoag and Dotsch, we believe oral health should begin when your child’s first tooth erupts or by their first birthday.

Preventive care treatments we offer at Hoag and Dotsch include:

  • Dental cleanings
  • Dental exams
  • Mouth guards
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Sealants

The purpose of a dental cleaning

Dental cleanings, known as prophylaxis, is to remove plaque from your teeth. Our mouth is home to many forms of bacteria. Bad bacteria collect on your teeth and if not removed, will harden and turn into plaque, referred to as tartar. Even with regular brushing and flossing, tartar build-up is inevitable. Tartar can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning.

The mouth is essentially the gateway to your overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to many other health-related complications including:

  • Gingivitis
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Heart attacks
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy complications (including birth defects)

What to expect during your visit

A trained and experienced dental hygienist will use special instruments to remove tartar buildup from your teeth and around your gum line. Your teeth will be polished and flossed, leaving your mouth feeling clean and fresh. X-rays are usually taken as means to document your oral heath and to identify any unforeseen issues. The dentist will also evaluate your mouth for any oral concerns. Some patients may require further dental care, which will be discussed during your visit.

Drs. Hoag and Dotsch encourage everyone to take part in healthy oral hygiene habits and regular cleanings and checkups. To schedule your next appointment, contact us today. We welcome patients of Shoreline, Edmonds, and Seattle, Washington.
