Having bright white teeth certainly gives you something to smile about! The emergence of over-the-counter whitening toothpastes and whitening strips shows just how important this is to millions of people. Although these drugstore treatments have some effect, they fall short of giving patients what they really want – a lasting white smile.
When you purchase a whitening kit or strips from the store, the strength of bleach you get whitens only the outer layer of your teeth; the enamel. This will produce a whiter look initially, but the real discoloration of teeth goes beyond the enamel. Your dentist is the only one who can provide treatment strong enough to wipe out these deep stains.
Stains may come from food, tobacco, medications, or your genetic make-up. Regardless of the cause, the bleaching action of Opalescence works incredibly well to counteract discoloration. We offer our patients the option of in-office whitening or a take-home kit they can use daily.
Patients like this particular at-home treatment because the gel is sticky and doesn’t migrate to the gums. This allows for a much more comfortable whitening session. To prepare a patient for his or her Opalescence whitening treatment, Drs. Hoag and Dotsch will determine the strength and type of gel most suitable, based on your desired results. A custom tray is created from impressions taken of your mouth. Opalescence gives you the opportunity to use gel that contains potassium fluoride (PF), which improves oral health by strengthening tooth enamel while decreasing sensitivity, and it helps to prevent cavities.
The in-office option, Opalescence Boost, enables the patient to walk out of the office with a brighter smile in 60 to 90 minutes. This treatment also features the use of potassium nitrate and fluoride to decrease sensitivity and improve oral health. What it doesn’t feature is heat or the use of ultraviolet light, unlike some other popular dental chair solutions. Simply mixed and applied, Opalescence Boost provides a perfect chemically-activated whitening system that produces a healthy white smile in one easy visit.
Whitening the smile is the fastest way of rejuvenating one’s appearance. Doing so can dramatically change the way patients look while also giving them a boost of confidence. Teeth whitening treatments are available over-the-counter at local drug stores but often provide poor performance. Patients are typically unhappy with the minimal results they achieve and may schedule an appointment to talk to a dentist in the Edmonds area about options that are more effective.
At Hoag & Dotsch, we offer both in-office power bleaching and take-home whitening trays. Our in-office bleaching, called Opalescence Boost, allows patients to rest in the dental chair as the solution works hard at dissolving stains deep within the enamel. This method whitens teeth in approximately one hour. Patients can exit our dental office with a dazzling new smile and the confidence to enjoy life to its fullest!
In addition, we also offer take-home whitening trays. These are made from impressions of the natural teeth to ensure a proper fit, and whitening gel is provided to use in these trays. Whitening the teeth in this manner can be a wonderful way for patients to control the results and maintain them over time. Our practice can provide more gel as necessary.
The best candidates for teeth whitening are those who regularly visit their Edmonds area dentist and have healthy smiles. These are patients who are having their routine cleanings completed, treating developing concerns, and taking good care of their smile in-between appointments. Additionally, candidates should have smiles free from restorations such as crowns, veneers, and bridges, as they do not lighten with the whitening process. Patients with restorations can still undergo teeth whitening if they plan to maintain the results and are interested in replacing their restorations if necessary.
Drs. Hoag and Dotsch of the Edmonds area are excited to meet new patients to educate them on the services provided in their practice. Patients interested in whitening their smile will need to have a simple examination completed as well as an evaluation of their dental health to determine if they are appropriate candidates.
